Wakrah Souq
Description
Al Wakrah Old Souq
Al Wakrah Old Souq is one of Qatar's most significant tourist destinations, located in Al Wakrah, the country's second oldest city. Just 10 km from Hamad International Airport and a 15-minute drive from downtown Doha, this heritage market offers a unique cultural experience.
A Glimpse into History
Built on the ruins of the old Al Wakrah city, the souq is estimated to be over 200 years old and has witnessed many historical events. Officially inaugurated in 2016, Al Wakrah Old Souq spans 623,765 square meters and comprises 415 traditional houses. It is uniquely situated on the eastern side of Al Wakrah beach, extending 1237 meters along the seashore, making it the only heritage market in Qatar with a beachfront.
Cultural Charm and Shopping Delight
Visiting traditional markets, or souqs, in Arab countries is always a delight for their cultural ambiance and the chance to shop for local delicacies and souvenirs. While Souq Waqif near Doha Corniche is iconic, Al Wakrah Souq, also known as Souq Al Wakra or Al Wakra Heritage Village, offers a cultural and shopping haven near central Doha.
Opened in 2014, Al Wakrah Souq has become a favorite spot for both residents and tourists. Here's what you need to know before you visit:
