Description

The National Museum of Qatar is located in Doha, Qatar and was opened to the public on 28 March 2019. The building was designed by architect Jean Nouvel, who drew inspiration from the desert rose crystal found in Qatar. The museum site includes Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani's Palace, which is central to Qatari national identity. From 2013 to 2023, Sheikha Amna served as the museum's director. In February 2024, Sheikh Abdulaziz H. Al Thani took over as the director.

The museum's galleries are arranged in chronological order, covering themes such as the natural history of the desert and the Persian Gulf, Bedouin culture, tribal wars, the establishment of the Qatari state, and the discovery of oil to the present. The displays feature carefully selected treasures from the museum's collection, which includes approximately 8,000 objects such as archaeological artifacts, architectural elements, household and traveling objects, textiles and costumes, jewelry, decorative arts, books, and historical documents.

The museum's mission is to celebrate the culture, heritage, and future of Qatar and its people. It aims to embody the pride and traditions of Qataris while offering international visitors a dialogue about rapid change and modernization. Inaugurated with materials that signify Qatar's cultural heritage, the museum houses Bedouin ethnographic materials, maritime artifacts, environmental items, and locally-derived ancient artifacts.
